Put Down That...High Chair...Before Someone Gets Hurt!!

Today Evenflo posted a recall bulletin on their website, entitled “Evenflo Recalls Majestic™ High Chairs Due to Fall and Choking Hazards”. The good news, I guess, is that the company and the Consumer Product Safety Commission are acting before any deaths occurred. The bad news is that protective plastic caps and metal screws were falling out of the high chairs, offering consumption opportunities that would keep me up at night, and causing--and I quote--
“the seatback to suddenly fall back or detach from the high chair. Children can fall out or collide with objects [like the floor?!] and suffer broken bones, abrasions, cuts and bruises.”

According to an article on MSNBC, the high chairs in question are made in China. The recall once again raises concerns about the quality control being exercised by American companies that have outsourced their production overseas, and whether the Consumer Product Safety Commission can be everywhere at once.

Shoppers will be hard-pressed to find high chairs still made in the United States, but here are a few suggestions:

--Little Colorado, which makes solid wood furniture for little people in Denver, CO
--Rochelle Furniture, which makes beautiful wooden high chairs in Ludington, MI

Hey Steph,
That's the first thing I was wondering(if they were made in china), because they said they are a company based here in Ohio. I was going to look up if they were made here, or in china. I probably didn't even have to look.... My 2nd reason I buy Made in USA, Quality, and continuity.
(1st being Giving Americans Jobs).

Happy Holidays!

Yeah, Matthew! It's so true that much manufacturing outsourced to China is not of the same calibre of that done previously in the US. Take Revere-ware pans and tea kettles -- much thinner than the American-made, though it retains its brand name.

Ohio has fabulous wares: Sugarcreek storm doors, Longaberger baskets, to name two fine products. And there's a great newspaper - the Funny Times of Cleveland (for those who need an ironic chuckle in these difficult times).

I buy Made in the USA as often as I can! I am also a crafter selling my made in the usa stuff, and I use made in the usa supplies as much as I can!

I have seen so many factories close in North Carolina

Thanks for your site! I will be referring to it often!

personally I have never been happy with plastic folding type highchairs. They just seem insecure and the child has a relatively long way to fall in one.
I think the 'cube' style where it can he a low or high chair and one piece slots into the other are safer as there is no folding mechanism or other moving parts which may be prone to failure.

I only normally buy products that are made in the United States anyway, although I'm not sure where my baby's high chair was made, but we've never had a problem with it and it's as strong as can be!
